Graceful curls & art-worthy façades

This tour will explore Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) architecture in Utrecht. The elegant shapes of Art Nouveau (1890-1914) are visible all over Europe. From the entrances to the Paris Underground, the Eiffel Tower, the Folies Bergère posters and the Moulin Rouge to Grand Café’s in Brussels, Prague and Victor Horta’s residences in Brussels. This international style features many regional differences. Some architects had great difficulties letting go of the ecclesiastical styles of the 19th century.

In Utrecht this resulted in a typical mix of neo-gothic and Art Nouveau architecture. Art Nouveau architects used a lot of modern materials, for example iron-cast beams and industrially produced windowpanes. This made the style very useful for buildings with large windows, such as warehouses, pharmacies, clothing stores etc.

What’s typical for Dutch art nouveau architecture is the use of glazed bricks in a variety of colours, making up tiled (symbolic) images relating to the purpose of the building.
